Measuring the water footprint of food production with Blockchain

In an effort to transform the value of the water, Kilimo, with support from RSK, a leader in blockchain technology in Latin America, is incorporating a blockchain tool to measure the water footprint of food production using satellite data at the land plot level.

Kilimo, the renown AgTech company which has been providing fast and reliable irrigation recommendations for improving output and reducing direct costs for producers of agriculture,has begun issuing verifiable, unforgeable, transparent smart certificates, protected by blockchain and supported by RSK’s smart contract platform. By providing a few pieces of information, a producer can receive a certificate bearing the estimation of the direct blue and green water footprints of their establishment.

Water is essential to agricultural production and food safety. 70% of the water extracted from aquifers, rivers and lakes today is used in agriculture while 20% is used in industry and 10% is destined for household use.

The water crisis is among the top ten highest probable risks faced by the world’s population. We are facing off with a new challenge that compels us to use our natural resources more efficiently over time: we need to produce more using less water.
